Kick-Ass Cover Kickoff: Punch Brothers – Reptilia

Welcome to the first of a new series called “Kick-Ass Covers” – if you can’t guess what it’s about, welp, I’m not sure how to help you.

Today’s kick-ass cover comes from a personal favorite of yours truly, a fine group of men known as Punch Brothers.  Now if you don’t know who the Punch Brothers are, let me inform you.  They are a string band made up of some of the finest goddamn musicians I have ever seen live.  Their frontman and mandolin player Chris Thile is often referred to as “the son of bluegrass” – as his talent level far surpasses any of his contemporaries (and most of predecessors).  But don’t be fooled by the fact that they look like a traditional bluegrass band, these boys mean business.  Their latest album Who’s Feeling Young Now is chock full of tracks that would please even the most wary of listeners.  And if you’re a musician?  Well shit, this is basically a grab bag of musical treats.

But enough of my raving and rambling.  The best way to enter into a love affair such as my own with the Punch Brothers is to start with some of there remarkable covers.  I had a hard time picking one to share with you all, so I went with the first one I ever heard: Reiptilia by the Strokes.  For me the cover is so wonderful because of how well the song lends itself to stringed instruments.  That and, well, Chris Thile.

If you’re intrigued, I’d recommend following the related videos and going on a musical journey with the Punch Brothers.  Also you should probably check this out.  Trust me, you won’t be disappointed.
