Some people out there watch True Blood. In fact, from what I’ve heard, a lot of people do. I, however, am not one of those people. Normally this doesn’t bother me in the slightest, but I almost wish I were a fan so that I would’ve caught last week’s episode “Let’s Boot and Rally” – as it features the song of the same name written and recorded exclusively for the show by Bethany Cosentino (of Best Coast fame) and none other than Iggy Pop. The song’s scribe, True Blood music supervisor, and KCRW DJ Gary Calamar premiered the song on the KCRW Music Blog last week, and gave a little bit of back story about how the song came to be.
But enough background, let’s get down to the song itself. The song, to put it simply, rocks. While the two could not have more different vocal styles, the juxtaposition of Iggy’s low growl with Bethany’s lighter, poppier sound is perfection. Listening to the track, you can definitely see how it would fit into an episode, with the beat driving the pace of the action – but personally I can also imagine a crowd of both aging punk rockers and artsy hipster kids nodding their heads in unison to the endless chorus of “Let’s boot and rally, boot and rally, boot and rally, boot and rally…” Because hey, we’ve all been there right?
